The beneficial effects of CBD oil on the human body are being talked about more and more. Among other things, cannabidiol has a very good stress- and tension-relieving properties, enhances health and also helps to relieve pain. It is also sometimes used as a form of therapy to help treat cancer.
Interestingly, some people choose to give CBD oil to their four-legged pets as well. Can dogs really consume CBD oil? How does this formulation work on animals? We provide the answer below.
CBD – what is it?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural chemical compound that is contained in cannabis sativa. It has quite a few beneficial properties that impact the human endocannabinoid system. CBD oil is most commonly made from the seeds of cannabis sativa, although you can now also buy CBD teas, snacks, dried product and even cosmetics or sweets.
CBD oil for dogs
Dogs, not unlike humans, have an endocannabinoid system, so CBD oils often have a therapeutic effect on them. The beneficial properties of CBD oil were confirmed by several studies.
Researchers found that CBD oils have a good effect on dogs with established epilepsy, reducing their seizures significantly. In addition, these preparations also relieve joint pain and improve joint mobility. Joint conditions tend to affect dogs that belong to the bigger races.
Interestingly, a recent study from 2021 found that CBD oils also alleviate aggressive behaviour in dogs, significantly reducing the stress and tension that can cause unnecessary aggression in these animals.
CBD oil for dogs – how much to give them?
Pet guardians who decide to administer CBD to their dogs often wonder just how many drops of the oil should actually be used. It all depends, of course, on the individual needs of the animal. How CBD oil affects your pet can only be observed by carefully analysing your dog’s behaviour. However, you should always start with a minimum dose, so giving roughly 1 or 2 mg of CBD per approximately 4 kg of body weight will be your safest bet. If the desired results are not observed, the dose can be then increased. However, you probably shouldn’t give your pet a greater dose initially.
CBD for dogs – what should you buy?
The most popular CBD product for dogs is, of course, the oil. However, tinctures and treats containing CBD are also a good option. They often contain natural flavours, which makes dogs much more willing to eat them.
Dogs, like humans, also have an endocannabinoid system, so CBD oils affect them in a very similar way. Recent studies have shown that CBD oil has a great effect on pets suffering from epilepsy, among other conditions, as it reduces and alleviates the seizures associated with this disease.
Furthermore, the preparation is also good for dogs struggling with osteoarthritis, as it improves their mobility and reduces pain. Furthermore, another study has shown that CBD helps to alleviate aggressive behaviour in dogs. When administering CBD oil to your pet, it is a good idea to start with as low a dose as possible and, observing their behaviour, increase the dose if and when necessary.
